APPLICATION SECTORS :

- Location Innovation
The massive deployment of Location Based Services has been predicted for many years, but progress so far has been painfully slow. The benefits for business operation, efficiency and customer choice in commerce have been identified by researchers, and a whole range of new services for customers can be conceived. Yet there are clearly barriers to implementation…

One barrier to deployment is user concern over loss of privacy. Early adopters will demonstrate the tangible benefits from using these technologies far outweigh the worries over privacy.

A second barrier is the lack of a suitable location technology. GPS receivers have been built into mobile phones, but suffer from high power consumption and poor performance in urban areas. Whereas Cell-ID requires no additional power, but provides insufficient precision for most applications, particularly in rural areas.

HW believes that its family of probabilistic positioning technologies will present a highly cost effective means to provide sufficient location accuracy for most applications. HW’s positioning paradigms typically use a midlet that can be downloaded into currently deployed cell phones to provide an approximate location independently of the cellular network operator. The technique can also be used in conjunction with the operators Cell-ID service, or in conjunction with GNSS, in order to improve accuracy and integrity respectively.

- Remote Medical Assistance
HW has been active within the development of novel data multiplexing techniques to enable robust and secure multi-bearer communications, and its application for enabling Remote Medical Assistance (Telemedicine) for many years. HW's product RADEEM (Rapidly Deployable Emergency Multimedia) first gained recognition in 2001 on the BBC Tomorrow's World programme; and when it was also awarded the "Most Innovative Application Development" award (Tetra World Congress 2001). The initial prototype in 2001 has since been turned into a successful product where it is now commercially deployed within ambulance services worldwide.

- Security & Privacy
Mobile and Internet transactions are largely open and freely accessible to anyone with basic equipment, and it is currently easier to intercept internet transactions than it is to eavesdrop on traditional telephone lines. Security is a major concern as e-business and mobile communications grow, and HW has played an active role providing consultancy to companies regarding potential vulnerabilities which may jeopardise their core business activities. Furthermore, HW Communications has involvement within the application of Secure Virtual Identities, and mechanisms to maintain privacy within today's pervasive communication systems.

- Powerline Communications
Our involvement within powerline communications encompasses two threads which utilise two very different, but equally important inherent advantages which powerline communications provides. (1) Communication in hostile environments when wireless simply does not work; and (2) low-cost, low data rate powerline modems which can be used within Machine-To-Machine communication systems.

- Tetra Solutions
HW is active within ETSI standardisation for Tetra 2. In addition, HW has a strong academic background within communication systems, and methods to enable efficient data communications upon technologies (such as Tetra) which have restrictive bandwidth allocations. HW's Tetra Solutions concentrate upon mechanisms to enable image and video transfer for the purpose of remote surveillance and real-time multimedia communications.
